Dear UN Commission on Human Rights,

My name is Most Venerable Thich Khong Tanh, Deputy President of the Executive Council of the Sangha of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, Co-Chair of the Interfaith Council of Vietnam, Co-Chair of the Council for the Association between Vietnam and Abroad. I would like to extend my warmest greetings to the entire 2019 UPR UN Conference.

Since the Communist Party invaded South Vietnam on April 30, 1975, the UBCV has been oppressed, persecuted and almost eradicated by the Vietnamese Communist Government!

All temples, monasteries, cultural, educational and charitable establishments were destroyed, appropriated or transferred to the State-owned Vietnamese Buddhist Church, erected by the State in 1981.

Since 1977, I personally have been imprisoned by the Vietnamese Communist Party for three times totaling 16 years and under house arrest and detention since then! Lien Tri Temple in Thu Thiem, District 2, Saigon where I was the abbot has been demolished by the State, taking the temple’s land for business purposes!

Of the two advisers and leaders of the UBCV, the Most Venerable Thich Thien Minh, was tortured to death in prison in 1978 and the Most Venerable Thich Duc Nhuan, after nearly ten years in prison, was also isolated and placed under house arrest till his death.

The Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang, the Fourth Supreme Patriarch of the UBCV, was imprisoned for decades by the state in Nghia Hanh, Quang Ngai, and then placed under house arrest in Quy Nhon Hospital until near death for his disciples to return him to Nguyen Thieu Monastery for funeral services.

The Most Venerable Thich Quang Do, the Fifth Supreme Patriarch, was also imprisoned and detained for decades, presently suffering from dementia and living at Tu Hieu Temple, District 8, Saigon!

Currently many religious institutions, temples, Buddhist and other religious practitioners in Vietnam are being repressed, harassed, destroyed and demolished by the state, as briefly summarized by Dr. Tran Quoc Hung to the Conference.

Dear entire conference,

Since the traditional, established and independent Churches of the five religions in Vietnam are suppressed, persecuted, and mostly eradicated, we have tried to establish the Interfaith Council of Vietnam to unite these religions, to speak up calling for the international community to help  the traditional and independent Churches survive, not being destroyed by the Communist state and allowing us to practice true freedom of religions, according to the international covenants and conventions.

We look forward to you, the UN Commission on Human Rights, and the governments of the free and democratic countries in the world, intervening to help us. We sincerely appreciate your assistance.

Thành phố Đà Nẵng bám sát,theo dõi sách nhiễu gây khó khăn để tôi không thể ở lại 

Đà Nẵng đưa đám tang một Thành Viên Cao cấp của Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam 

Thống Nhất là Hòa Thượng Thích Thanh Quang nguyện Viện Trưởng Viện Hóa Đạo

GHPGVNTN kiêm Trụ Trì Chùa Giác Minh ở Đà Nẵng vừa chết một cách đột ngột hôm 

6 tháng 3 năm 2019 !

Sự sách nhiễu nầy theo tôi là do trước đó 10 hôm tôi có gởi thư lên Hội Nghị Ủy Ban Nhân 

Quyền Liên Hiệp Quốc xin can thiệp cho Chùa Liên Trì ở Thủ Thiêm Quận 2 của tôi đã bị

nhà nước san bằng,cưỡng chế một cách phi pháp cũng như đã đàn áp,bách hại nhằm 

tiêu diệt cho được Giáo Hội Phật Giáo Việt Nam Thống Nhất truyền thống của chúng tôi

suốt từ ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 1075 đến nay.

Chúng tôi xin phép gởi kèm Thư (copy) tôi gởi cho Hội Nghị Ủy Ban Nhân Quyền LHQ để Bà 

được biết và kính nhờ Quý Tỗng Lãnh Sự Quán cũng như Bộ Ngoại Giao Hoa Kỳ quan tâm

giúp đở,can thiệp cho Chùa Liên Trì cũng như cho GHPGVNTN chúng tôi được phục hoạt và

Việt Nam sớm có được Dân Chủ Nhân Quyền,Tự Do Tôn Giáo thực sự.
