CHIN HAM PRISON – HELL ON EARTH IN HUE – HIDDEN LAND TRAVEL

Chin Ham prison is a historical relic in Hue. The prison located on the foot of Thien Thai Mountain, Thuy An village. Chin Ham like as associated with the evil crimes that the Ngo fammily has caused to Vietnamese. Nowadays, the prison is still a popular tourist attraction in Hue. So, this is a place travelers can not explore if visitors are a person who likes to learn history.

How Chin Ham prison was built

About 6 km southwest of the center in Hue City, Chin Ham prison is located on the foot of Thien Thai Mountain. It was built in 1941 by French colonial. Previously, it used for storage of materials and weapons. In 1946, the French colonial returned and turned it into a prison. This area was left empty. After Ngo Dinh Diem as president of the Republic of Viet Nam formed a dictatorship family of the Ngo family. Representative of the Ngo family in the Central is Ngo Dinh Can. In 1954, Ngo Dinh Can turned this place into the detention of revolutionary soldiers, participants in the patriotic movement. The prison has called Chin Ham.

Why Chin Ham prison like as a hell on earth in Hue

The total area of the prison  is 4 ha. It has 8 tunnels and a watchtower. Each tunnels has 20 small room, each room measures 0,9m wide, 2m long and 2m hight. The largest tunnel is 85m2, the smallest is 41m2. The tunnels was built by reinforced concrete.  Each tunnel has a single vent. Chin Ham prison like as a grave which buried alive people.  Depending on the different criminals detained in different tunnels. Tunnels  1, 6, 7, 8 was used to detain communists and spies.  Tunnel 8 is the most terrible tunnel in Chin Ham prison. Tunnel 2 was for businessmen. Tunnels 3, 4 detained  activists who opposed Diem’s dictatorship of the Ngo family. Tunnel 5 imprisoned monks, students, women and workers and tunnel 9 was used as a watchtower. There are thousands of people who have died in prison.

Chin Ham prison has existed from 1954 to 1963. On the day that the Ngo Dinh Can was arrested, the Ngo family was attacked, the local people went to prison to break down it.

Nowadays, government and local people was built the indomitable memorial house at the entrance to the prison. Going to the prison, travelers will see many pictures, material in here. Specially, travelers can visit tunnel 8- the most terible in Chin Ham prison
